Nakashima Foundation for Peace to Hold Celebration of Unity

Unveiling of Restored Ben Shahn Mosaic

New Hope, PA  (September 11, 2019)  -- The Nakashima Foundation for Peace will hold a Celebration of Unity marking the beginning of bringing a new peace table to life to join those already in place in North America, Asia and Europe. The afternoon will feature the planting of a tree as a symbol of preserving Mother Earth for future generations in this time of Amazon fires and climate stress. The high point of the afternoon will be illustrative remarks and the formal unveiling of the restored mosaic, "The Poet's Beard" which was a gift of peace from renowned artist Ben Shahn, which graces one wall of the Nakashima Arts Building. The celebration including music, meditation, and light refreshments will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2019, from 3:00-5:00 PM at the Nakashima Foundation Arts Building, 1847 Aquetong Road, in New Hope, Pennsylvania.

This special event will feature remarks by: Mira Nakashima, President of the Nakashima Foundation and Creative Director of George Nakashima Woodworkers, Vladimir Aituganov, Master Mosaic Artist, who will share his experiences working with the Shahn family and restoring the mosaic, and Elizabeth Allan, Deputy Director and Curator at Morven Museum & Garden who will talk about Ben Shahn’s impact in shaping an artist colony in New Jersey.

The mission of the Nakashima Foundation for Peace is to build Sacred Peace Tables for each continent of the world and to preserve both the legacy of George Nakashima, a leading innovator of 20th century furniture design, and the National Historic Landmark designated Nakashima Property in New Hope, Pennsylvania for future generations.
